A state lawmaker wants to fine voters ten dollars if they don't cast ballots on election day.

An assemblywoman from New York City says the move would increase voter turnout and also make elected officials more accountable. Voters with a valid excuse not to vote would be exempt from the fine.

The bill cites a similar law in Australia, where voter turnout is nearly 90 percent.
