Pittsford resident Brittany Thomson has been searching for the cheapest flights home from college this holiday season. Thomson likes to fly home from South Carolina as often as possible but the rising costs of air travel may change that. “I've been trying to book my flights ahead of time because it seems a little bit cheaper, but it's still pretty expensive.” Thomson is like a number of travelers who are finding themselves paying more because of airline fees. Last year the airlines collected $2.3-billion in fees. So far this year, they've made $3.8-billion. Checked baggage fees, preferred seat fees and if you fly the Sunday after Thanksgiving or the weekend after New Year’s - there's another $10 fee. So is it cheaper to drive or take the train? We asked that question to AAA. AAA Travel Professional Tracey Miller said, “The whole idea with travel now...there's no perfect way anymore. So you go with what's right for your family, you go with what you can afford and plan ahead whenever you can.” Miller says it's possible to get better deals by diligently checking prices on the internet. She says in addition to working with a travel professional, she recommends checking the airline websites on Sunday morning. She says airlines change prices on Sunday and she says it's a time when many people are not online. For more Rochester, N.Y. news go to our website wwww.whec.com. Participate in our WHEC Web Poll: |
