Greece residents who say they are going to vote, say the police department scandal is an issue with them. "I think just the issues that Greece has had with the police department, and previously the assessor," said Sandy Smith. "So I think there needs to be a change." Jody Shay said, "It does give me pause. However, I don't think it reflects on the town as a whole. So I'm going to keep that in mind, that it was hopefully an isolated incident." Voters also cited taxes, and the tone of the campaign. "To make sure that he is keeping the taxes in Greece down, that's my main concern," said Marilyn Sibley. Jim Roth said what's important to him is "The way they're campaigning. I really don't like to see the negative ad campaigns that don't have anybody's name on them, or maybe supported whether by the Democratic or Republican side just trashing the other guy." News 10NBC caught up with both candidates Monday. Democrat Dan Maloney was campaigning door to door with a list of targeted voters he hopes to sway. "I want to open up town government," said Maloney. "Re-building trust. Getting the price back. No more scandal. No more corruption." Greece Town Supervisor John Auberger, the Republican, said "It is taxes, and trying to do more with less. We've done our best to try to keep any rate increase below the rate of inflation. Maloney is an individual who has no municipal responsibility. He has a glaring lack of municipal finance." Both are using hard-hitting tactics. Auberger calls Maloney a union boss. Maloney responds, "What I advocate for is workers. Trying to get folks to have a decent family sustaining wage. I don't think that's a bad thing." And Maloney says there's a cloud of corruption and scandal over Auberger. "Obviously we have a police issue," said Auberger. "And the people will judge me based on how I handle the issue." Democrat Maloney supports keeping interim Police Chief Brian Urhmacher to head the police department. Republican Auberger and the Greece Town Board favor opening up the job of chief to a pool of applicants. For more Rochester, NY news, go to our website, www.whec.com.
