Tug of war in Greece over absentee ballots

Election Day may be over but there's one race that is still undecided: the race for Greece town supervisor between Republican incumbent John Auberger and democratic challenger Dan Maloney. Now there's a tug-of-war going on over absentee ballots.

A woman who didn’t want to be identified told News 10NBC, “People are ready for a change.”

This woman says she voted for challenger Dan Maloney. “You know what, he was a fresh face. He was articulate on the radio.”

Arlene Fede said, “I think the people of Greece wanted to send a message that we're tired of the monkeying around and we'd like to get down to business. We'd like an honest town where people can count on the people who are in charge.”

Kathy Zimmerman says the election came out the way she wanted it. She said, “You know, the police and all that for Auberger was negative but he really didn't have anything to do with that. He did the right thing.”

Herb Dewyea said, “He doesn't seem to be involved in it but that may have hurt him a little bit but I think he's done a good job.”

Auberger claimed victory. “They were subjected to such lies. Misinformation you would not believe. We've had talk show hosts against us. We had everyone against us. But we won, I say thanks to the town of Greece, thanks to all of you.”

But Maloney is not conceding. “The town is deeply divided, as was witnessed by this race. All votes are not counted yet. So we're going to wait until they are because it is so close.”

Maloney thought he would win big. “I was fully expecting to win going into this one, so that it was this close is surprising to me.”

Last night, News 10NBC asked Auberger how he will try to reach out to the 49-percent who voted against him. He said, “Just try to do the best that I possible can to try to provide these good services that we have been providing.”

News 10NBC has double checked with the Board of Elections and this is how it likely will play out.

Commissioner Peter Quinn says 426 absentee ballots were counted last night and are part of the final vote tally. As of this afternoon, there are 124 absentee ballots yet to be counted and more are likely to be received by mail in the next several days. All the remaining absentee ballots will be counted next Tuesday, November 10. Auberger leads by 422 votes.

Quinn says it’s unlikely that the absentee ballots could chance the outcome. There could also be some affidavit ballots where people showed up at the polls and voted by affidavit. Even if all were for Maloney, he would need 423 more votes to declare victory.

The official machine recount is Friday.
