Bankruptcy filings rise in October

Rochester-area bankruptcy filings in October were up 13 percent over October 2008, figures compiled by the Western District of New York Bankruptcy Court clerk show.
In October, 323 area individuals and businesses filed new bankruptcy petitions. In the same month last year, there were 310 filings in the region.
Area bankruptcy filings last month included 222 Chapter 7 petitions seeking liquidation, petitions for 98 Chapter 13 and two Chapter 11 debtors seeking to reorganize under court supervision. There was one Chapter 12 farm bankruptcy.
The federal court’s nine-county Rochester region encompasses the counties of Monroe, Wayne, Ontario, Livingston, Seneca, Yates, Steuben, Schuyler and Chemung.
