The labor department reported first-time jobless claims last week were at their lowest level since January. That means fewer people are being laid off but today President Obama says there's still a long road ahead. “In December, we'll be holding a forum at the White House on jobs and economic growth. We'll gather CEOs and small business owners, economists and financial experts, as well as representatives from labor unions and non-profit groups to talk about how we can work together to create jobs and get this economy moving again.” For retailers, the big test is just ahead with holiday shopping. From discount giants like Wal-Mart, to mom and pop shops, businesses will be looking for what could be the most important sign in this recovery - consumer confidence. Retailers that are hiring for the holidays are seeing a new group of applicants, people who are thinking more long term employment. Kristina Linville has been searching for a job since turning 17 in June but she's not getting any bites, not even a nibble. “It's really difficult because the older people who got fired, they're taking the younger peoples’ jobs and all the people in high school its hard for them to get a part or full-time job.” Retailers who normally hire workers for the holidays are seeing some new trends this year. Adults who've lost jobs or have been laid off are vying for the same positions traditionally sought after by high school students, college students and young adults. Some seasonal jobs could turn into full-time permanent positions in human resources, management and finance but in this tough economy retailers are hiring fewer people. Like Linville has found out, competition is tough. Even at places like Michael’s Arts & Crafts where managers are looking to hire workers. “We're getting about 10 to 20 season applications a week.” Jim Gunzburg is the manager of the Greece store. About 10-percent of the people he hires will stay on past the holidays. “We've had people who've excelled in our company start out in seasonal positions.” Bath and Body Works is looking for a number of workers for its Rochester stores while Michael’s is looking to hire about 20 people for it's four Rochester stores.
