Small plane with two on board crashes in Adirondacks

WHEC-TVNEWCOMB, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a small plane with two people on board has crashed in the Adirondacks and a rescue operation is under way to reach the remote crash site.

State Police say that the Piper Cherokee went down near Santanoni Mountain, a 4,600-foot peak in the sparsely populated Essex County town of Newcomb, 90 miles northwest of Albany.

Authorities say the plane left Saratoga County Airport on Sunday, headed for Malone in northern New York. When the pilot didn't arrive for an event Monday evening, a friend contacted authorities.

The wreckage was spotted Tuesday morning. Police say troopers and state forest rangers are headed to the scene.

The names of the pilot and passenger haven't been released.
