Canandaigua, N.Y. - The Canandaigua VA Medical Center will be in line for more nearly $37 million in funding for construction and renovation projects - including a new 120-bed living center -  if a spending bill approved today by the U.S. Senate emerges unscathed when combined with the House bill.

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer today announced that the Senate has approved the Fiscal Year 2010 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations bill, which includes $36,850,000 for work at the storied the Canandaigua campus.

The funding is the latest example of the 76-year-old facility’s resurgence after it was slated for closure by the Bush Administration.

"The VA Medical Center in Canandaigua provides much-needed care and support for our veterans, that is why I fought tirelessly since 2003 to keep this great community asset open and serving the veterans of upstate New York,” said Schumer in a prepared statement. “With this hurdle in the appropriations process cleared, we are that much closer to ensuring that these brave men and women have access to the best facilities and services available.”

Schumer’s office said the funding would be used for the construction of a new 120-bed Community Living Center, a new or renovated 50-bed dorm facility, and renovation of several existing buildings for outpatient care and administrative services.

The spending bill must first go into conference with the House version before going back to the Senate and House and on to the president.
