Debate on health care overhaul set to begin

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Senate is set to begin debate tomorrow on the health care overhaul and cracks in the crucial Democratic support for the measure are evident.

The all-hands-on-deck Democratic coalition that mustered 60 votes last week to allow the bill to advance isn't there anymore and that's a problem for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Some Democratic senators want tighter restrictions on abortion coverage. Others say they'll jump ship unless a government plan to compete with private insurance companies gets tossed. Another group says they won't vote for a bill without the public option. And no Republicans are likely to cross party lines on this one.

The public is ambivalent.

While 58 percent want elected officials to tackle health care now, about half of those supporters say they don't like what they're hearing about the plans, according to a new Kaiser Family Foundation poll.
