Horse-and-buggy crash injures four; horse euthanized

Four people were injured, and a horse had to be put down, after an accident that involved a car and horse-and-buggy this morning.

It happened around 8:30 a.m. on County Road 18 in Gorham, just east of Canandaigua Lake.

Ontario County Sheriff's Deputies say a horse and buggy was hit from behind by a Ford Taurus, ejecting the four passengers from the buggy. The driver of the car, Stephen Barra of Canandaigua, blamed the glare from the sun from preventing him from seeing the buggy.

All four buggy passengers of the buggy -- Louis, Mable, Jessica and Judith Martin of Mumby Road in Canandaigua -- were taken to Strong Hospital, two of them by Mercy Flight. Mable is in guarded condition, Judith is in satisfactory condition, and both Louis and Jessica are under evaluation.

The accident shut down parts of the road for about two hours. We're told the buggy was demolished, the front end of the car was heavily damaged, and the Sheriff's Department had to put the horse down.
