(AP) WASHINGTON - The commandant of the Marine Corps is appealing to House and Senate leaders to complete a defense policy bill before the end of the year, calling it a national security imperative.

Gen. James Amos sent a letter to Republican and Democratic leaders similar to the plea from Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Amos said that failure to pass a bill would undercut logistical support for U.S. and coalition forces in Afghanistan, and create other problems.

The Associated Press obtained a copy of the letter on Tuesday.

House and Senate defense leaders said Monday that they had reached agreement on a $632.8 billion bill and have urged their leaders to allow votes on the legislation. Defense contractors also are pressing lawmakers to act.
