SchoolA 5th grader from Williamson made it all the way to Washington, D.C. – but he won’t be among 50 semifinalists in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Gavin Buehler spelled his two words correctly on stage Wednesday.

Those words were "evanesce" and "tchotchke".

But his performance on the written test wasn't quite enough to get him through to the semifinals.

8th graders Nabeel Rahman from Buffalo and Sruti Akula from Corning did make the cut.

Rahman was a finalist last year.

The winner in this year's contest will be crowned Thursday night.
