A former Gates Police Officer was killed in a one-car crash in Greece Saturday morning. It happened shortly before 10 a.m. on West Ridge Road in Greece.
Police say 46-year-old Sung "Sonny" Chung was walking on West Ridge Road when a driver lost control of their SUV and hit him. Police say the SUV went up onto the sidewalk and then flipped. At some point during the crash, Chung was hit by the SUV. He was taken to Unity Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Unfortunately there were no eye witnesses so this is making it difficult for police to determine the cause until they complete the accident re-construction.
Police say its a devastating loss for the community.
Officer Chung retired from Gates Police Department in 2002, after a crash that left him with severe head trauma. He was responding to a call when his police cruiser slammed into a tree.
Even though Chung was never able to patrol the streets again he was still a frequent visitor. As a matter of fact he paid a visit to the Gates Police Department just days ago, making the tragedy even more difficult for his law enforcement family.
Police say it wasn't out of character for Chung to be walking down the street. It's something he loved to do almost everyday.
They did tell us they have not filed any criminal charges against the driver and are treating this as an accident.
The driver was taken to the hospital with non life threatening injuries and police say he is cooperating with the investigation.
Police Chief Dicaro says he should know more about funeral arrangements within the next few days and they plan to honor him.
He leaves behind a wife and two sons.
Police are still investigating what caused Saturday's crash. There's no word yet on whether charges will be filed against Rader.
