New program at MCC for domestic violence victims

It can be very difficult for people who experience domestic violence to escape the abuse. When they do, that’s a major first step.

Now a new program is helping them take more steps to move on with their lives. It’s called The Business Entrepreneurship Program and it started Monday at Monroe Community College in Brighton. The program will teach skills needed to start their own businesses and put them on the road to being self sufficient.

Susan Still, a domestic violence survivor, said, “You may not know where to go, you may not have the education or the information to know what your next step is and many of us find ourselves in that space. This is an opportunity for us to be able to let our ideas grow, to give us direction on where we can go to make our dreams happen."

Still is among 17 domestic violence survivors taking part in the program. The program is funded with $100,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation
