As you retreat indoors to keep cool, it's likely you're gasping at the electric bill. But Kiplinger.com has some tips on lowering your cooling costs.

Close the curtains and set the thermostat at 78 degrees or higher when you're home.  When you're not at home, turn it up to 85 degrees. According to Edison Electric Institute, you'll save one to two-percent on cooling costs for each degree you raise the thermostat.

Kiplinger also suggests closing the doors to any unused rooms and closing their air supply vents.
