The women's volleyball team will have to sit the school year out. SUNY Geneseo announced Friday afternoon it has canceled the team's season.
This comes on the heels of criminal charges against 11 volleyball team members. SUNY Geneseo says the women violated the athletics code of conduct September 2 when upper class members are accused of blind folding, and hand cuffing eight new team members and forcing them to drink alcohol.
One student became ill and had to be taken to the hospital. The volleyball players will lose this year if eligibility. They will not be allowed to practice or play. The vice president of student and campus life says athletes are held to a higher standard and this is a teachable moment.
The president of SUNY Geneseo condemned the behavior the students are accused of and says it will not be tolerated. Each student will face a campus hearing to determine her future at SUNY Geneseo.
