An Ontario County woman, walking home from a store, is dead after an accident involving a van and a SUV that was pulling a trailer.
It happened on a curve on Route 21 about a mile south of Hill Cumorah. The woman was identified as 35-year-old Tabitha Harris. She was walking on the shoulder of the road.
A van traveling north on Route 21, for an unknown reason, apparently crossed over the center line. It struck the side of a small flatbed trailer that was empty.
The van came to rest against a utility pole. The SUV and trailer stopped further down the road.
The woman was walking home from a store about a mile away near the Manchester interchange of the Thruway.
Lt. Brad Falkey, Ontario County Sheriff’s Department, said, “At the last second, he saw the van come over and did what he could to avoid a collision but could not. When the trailer went out of control, it went to the side of the highway striking the pedestrian who was walking on the side of the highway.”
The Ontario County Sheriff's Department says the driver of the van was charged with failure to keep right. Route 21 was closed for nearly three hours.
