Residents in Canandaigua are reacting to the news that another school district employee has been accused of sexual misconduct involving a student.
Canandaigua Police charged Lisa Footer of Manchester with third degree sexual abuse, forcible touching and endangering the welfare of a child, after they say footer and the student, had an ongoing relationship.
And with this newest incident, it's starting to get to Canandaigua residents.
“Everyday you turn the TV on there's something. It's just disgusting.”
For some Canandaigua residents like Maggie Brewer, the arrest of a Canandaigua Academy teacher is disturbing and for Akil Lndsey, it's shocking.
“When the kids speak up we have to listen as adults definitely. especially in this type of situation. Like I said I don't know all the details or whatever, but it is shocking to me.”
People were learning of the arrest this evening as they were heading home. Police have accused Lisa Footer of carrying on a sexual relationship with a 16-year-boy. The charges stem from what police say was a sexual encounter with the teen in this parking lot on Saturday.
“They were introduced by a third party in the summer of this year and the relationship has been going on since then from what we can tell,” said Sgt. Scott Kadien, of the Canandaigua Police Department.
Footer is a Spanish teacher at Canandaigua Academy. She's 44-years-old, and a wife, and a mother of at least one teen herself.
“It is upsetting. It all depends on if the teacher actually did it,” said Naples Resident, Tyler Walker.
Mary Whittier, executive director of the Bivona Child Advocacy Center says this is an opportunity for parents to reassure their children.
“Whether it's someone that you know really well, a family member, someone that they are related to, someone in a position of authority; a teacher or coach, someone in the church. It is never okay for those kids to be in a situation like that, or for them be taken advantage of and that it's okay for kids to talk to their parents.”
This is not the first time the district has dealt with an incident like this..
A case is pending against Thomas Spina, a former teacher's aide accused of sexting students. AND In 2010, Marla Gurecki-Haskins was sentenced to 45 days in jail, and 3 years probation for endangering the welfare of a child and official misconduct because of her involvement with a 17-year-old male student.
In a statement today, the district said it is cooperating with police and reviewing its legal obligations regarding Footer's employment.
The school district says footer has been placed on administrative leave, until the criminal case against her is resolved. In the meantime, She is not allowed on school property.
