FDA seeks expert advice on health risks of energy drinks

The Food and Drug Administration may seek the advice of outside experts as it determines whether highly caffeinated energy drinks pose a health risk.

The agency has received reports of 18 deaths and more than a hundred injuries allegedly tied to consumption of energy drinks.

There's no proof the beverages caused the health problems, but in a released letter, FDA officials suggest their investigation could be enhanced by outside groups, like those in the prestigious institute of medicine.

Makers of energy drinks have insisted their products are safe.
