An earthquake has knocked items off shelves in homes around Anchorage, Alaska, but there are no immediate reports of injuries.

The magnitude 5.8 earthquake happened at about 4:45 p.m. Monday. The temblor was centered about 25 miles northwest of Anchorage.

Guy Urban, a geophysicist at the Alaska and West Coast Tsunami Warning Center, say the quake is not expected to generate a tsunami, but it was widely felt throughout much of southcentral Alaska.

John Owens, who lives in East Anchorage, said he felt the rumblings at his house for about 30 seconds. He says, "That was a tumbler, man."
