A mysterious package found on Sunnyside Road on the southeast end of Canandaigua Lake caused a stir Wednesday afternoon, with emergency crews and law enforcement on the scene including the state police bomb squad.
Yates County Sheriff's deputies and other emergency responders remained at the scene about 2 p.m. Naples firefighters and EMS were called in about 11:30 a.m. to remain on standby and prevent traffic from going down the dead-end road in the town of Italy.
Naples Fire Chief Patrick Elwell said Naples' crews were released from the scene about 1:30 p.m. and the road was reopened. Elwell did not have details but said "a surprise package" had been found on the road by the lake. Law enforcement "must have made some determination" on its contents, said Elwell, adding he didn't expect it caused a major emergency, since his crews were released.
Personnel at the Yates County Sheriff's office would not give details over the phone but said the office would issue a report.
Sunnyside Road, off Route 245, winds several miles along the southeast end of the lake and has a number of residences, many of which are seasonal.
