The first major snowstorm of the season is heading into upstate New York, with forecasters predicting up to a foot or more of snow mixed with sleet or freezing rain.
Dangerous travel conditions are expected Wednesday evening through Thursday evening. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for most of upstate New York.
Forecasters say snow will start Wednesday afternoon in western New York and accumulate to eight to 16 inches by 1 p.m. Thursday. Blowing snow will likely make travel hazardous.
Six to 12 inches of heavy, wet snow is expected in eastern New York, possibly changing to freezing rain on Thursday.
In central New York and the Mohawk Valley, forecasters say snowfall at times exceeding two inches per hour will make travel difficult Wednesday night.
