Beware of bogus e-mails from the IRS.
The IRS says it receives thousands of reports every year from taxpayers who have been sent e-mails claiming to be from the agency. It's important to know the IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers through e-mail – it will always contact you through snail mail.
If you receive an e-mail claiming to be from the IRS, the agency advises you not to reply to the message, not to open any attachments, and to not give out any confidential information.
