He is a "jazz great" and he's playing Thursday night in downtown Rochester. At a time when a lot of his peers are enjoying retirement, saxophonist Houston Person continues to blow audiences away.
News10NBC's Janet Lomax sat down with Person Thursday morning. He first played in Rochester years ago and told me he's happy to be back in town.
Person said, "It's a chance to see old friends."
He says he hopes when people come to his shows they get a chance to forget about the worries of the world and just enjoy some good music.
Person got his professional start in the 1960's and spent much of his career, 35 years playing with the late singer Etta Jones. They were a team. Janet asked how they connected. He chuckled and said he needed a singer and she needed a band.
Person said, "It was great. There were no egos to deal with. Everyone got equal time."
After more than 5 decades, Person is still recording. He has a new CD out called "naturally" and this 79 year old is on his way to India in November. He's in town as part of the Jazz 90.1 series. No surprise, the show is sold out.
