The words, "Please power down your electronic devices for takeoff" may soon be a thing of the past. Instead you may hear, "please put your devices in 'airplane mode' for takeoff."
Last year, the FAA set up a group to study the use of portable electronics on planes.
The New York Times reports, that according to people in that group, the agency is hoping to announce by the end of next year that it'll relax the rules for reading devices during takeoff and landing. The change would not include cell phones.
According to a FAA official speaking under anonymity, the FAA is under tremendous pressure to let passengers use reading devices or to provide evidence why they cannot.
