Can doctors now measure pain?

Neurologists may have found a scientific, objective way to measure pain.
Currently -- doctors rely on what patients tell them about the pain they're experiencing -- on a scale of one to 10, for example.
But a new study from the University of Colorado, Boulder, found distinct patterns of activity in brain scans of people exposed to varying degrees of heat.
This was only apparent when the participants were subjected to physical pain, rather than emotional pain.
The research could someday lead to objective tests and measures for pain management.
