Canandaigua City Police were called to the Canandaigua Primary School today after the primary school received word at about 11:30 a.m. that a man was on the railroad tracks above the school with what appeared to be a gun, according to an email sent out this afternoon to the parents of students at the primary and elementary schools.

Andrew Thomas, community relations coordinator for the district, said students who were outside for recess at the primary and elementary schools were brought into the buildings, and an administrator went to speak to the man.

Police responded and it was determined that the man was in possession of a BB gun, according to the email. Thomas said police advised that it was not necessary to go into a lockdown, and the schools returned to normal procedures at about 12:30 p.m.

"They responded very quickly after they got the 911 call," Thomas said.

He added that the district will evaluate its response to the incident.

"After every incident, we review our own procedures," Thomas said.

Further information was not immediately available.
