Three first responders, who were injured in the tragedy in West Webster on Christmas Eve, were honored Tuesday evening for serving as hometown heroes every day.

West Webster firefighters Joseph Hofstetter and Ted Scardino and Greece Police Officer John Ritter were recognized by Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks prior to the monthly County Legislature meeting.

Hofstetter, Scardino, Webster Police Lieutenant Mike Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowka were shot by William Spengler after they responded to a house fire on Lake Road in Webster. Chiapperini and Kaczowka were killed in the attack. Officer Ritter was on his way to work Christmas Eve morning when he came upon the scene on Lake Road. He was hit by shrapnel during the shooting but was able to find cover and call in what was happening to keep other firefighters and police officers away from the scene and out of danger.
