Hotel prices change all the time. And this year, some people coming to our area during the PGA Championship can expect to pay a whole lot more.

This is the time of year when most people start booking their vacations and hotel rooms or some may be visiting our area for weddings and graduations. So, News10NBC decided to take a look at our area and we found hotel prices will nearly triple during the upcoming PGA Tournament compared to the rest of the summer. But we found there is one thing you can do to cut costs.

Michael Marsch, Rochester Hotel Association President, said, “It is Economics 101, demand increases, price increases.”

Michael Marsch is the president of the Rochester Hotel Association. He spoke to News10NBC on behalf of all area hotels.

Marsch, said, “When there are these great opportunities for our industry to make money that's pretty important.”

The Comfort Inn on Monroe Avenue in Brighton is charging $104 for a room on the second week of July. For PGA week, the same room is priced at $299. Same thing at the Holiday Inn Express down the street, $114 in July, $329 in August. At the Courtyard Marriott near MCC, $127 in July, same room for the PGA is $309.

News10NBC Berkeley Brean said, “It's not price gouging at all?”

Don Jeffries, Visit Rochester CEO, said, “I don't think so it's just normal course of doing business. You know if your product is in high demand you can charge a higher rate. and I think that's what the hotels are doing.”

Brean said, “Is it unfair to people?”

Allen Bernstein, Deprez Group of Travel Co., said, “I wouldn't say that it is unfair. It puts the people at the disadvantage but as a business man I understand that this happens.”

If you have PGA tickets, Allen Bernstein was hired to negotiate lower rates for PGA ticket holders.

You navigate through the PGA's website, clicking on Rochester area hotels and participating hotels.

The rates are as much as $100 less than the market rate.

Bernstein said, “I've seen this many times in my career. In other cities were there are major events, rooms become scarce and the price becomes higher.”

People who can go on to the PGA's website to book their hotel rooms will save a couple of bucks through the PGA's block or negotiated hotel room rates for those attending the tournament.
