New York cheeses to be featured at Wegmans

It’s a new partnership that Wegmans hopes will expand the New York State cheese industry and showcase the products of the state.

On Wednesday, Wegmans announced that a selection of New York cheeses from five artisan cheesemakers will be available at its Pittsford store and that it’s giving $360,000 in funding for a pilot program at Cornell University.

The three-year pilot program will include the hire of an artisan cheese extension associate position in the CALS Department of Food Science at the university that will create a training program that will serve both entrepreneurs and the state’s larger cheese producers. The program will focus on cheesemaking through workshops and coursework.

"It is our goal to help grow the artisan cheese business by bringing unique and different cheeses to our customers," said Cathy Gaffney, Wegmans director of cheese and deli departments. "They have asked for more local selections. By combining the milk quality produced in New York state, our truly passionate cheesemakers, and Cornell University, we have all the components to take the industry to the next level while listening to our customers' requests."
