Getting neighborhoods to take a stand against crime is the message behind “National Night Out.”
Tuesday night several neighborhoods, including some in the Rochester area, held events to mark the annual occasion.
News10NBC went to the celebration at Baden Park in Rochester.
"National Night Out" began in 1984 as an effort to get people involved in crime prevention efforts in their neighborhoods. It's also a way to help them get to know their neighbors and the police officers who patrol the area.
Organizers of this event say neighbors must work together.
“The community is what makes this city what it is, and the community has to band together to bring peace to their neighborhoods, to bring prosperity, to work together. To clean up, create gardens and create an all around feeling of peace and love,” said Marisol Ramos-Lopez, Administrator for Northeast Neighborhood Center.
Similar events were held in communities across the country Tuesday night. Traditionally, "National Night Out" is held on the first Tuesday in August every year.
