The Ontario County Sheriff's Office says a plane flipped over in Canandaigua Lake while trying to take off Saturday morning.
That crash happened on the west side of the lake in the area of Davidsons Landing in the Town of Canandaigua around 9:30 a.m. Deputies say 71-year-old Joseph Bell had landed on the lake and was attempting to take off again when something went wrong and his plane flipped.
Officials say Bell was able to free himself from the plane and was not hurt. Residents who witnessed the crash, took a boat out to assist Bell and brought him into shore.
News10NBC talked with one witness about what was going through her mind as she was watching it all unfold.
"I was watching it and when it flipped I was kind of looking at it like 'Did that really just happen? Planes don't normally do that.' So I was really worried, I wanted to make sure people were okay,” said Megan Gleason.
When deputies arrived on scene, they were able to secure the plane before it sank and it was towed back to shore. Currently, crews are working to remove the plane from the water.
Deputies were assisted at the scene by Cheshire Volunteer Fire Department. The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.
