RIT held a special event on Friday for female students. It was the eighth annual "Lighting the Way" ceremony. Both first-year and transfer students carried lanterns down the the campus "quarter mile."

At RIT, the ratio of male to female students is 60 to 40, so this is an opportunity for women at the campus to be celebrated. And for upperclassmen and faculty to show their support for women walking on campus for the first time.

Cha Ron Sattler-Leblanc of the RIT Center for Women & Gender says, "Women are a little outnumbered, so we want to make sure they know they are welcome here and we value the contributions that they are making. Not only our campus, but what they're going to be making to the world when they leave."

After walking the mile, students had the chance to meet others at a dessert reception on campus.
