At Fairport High School, a unique program is starting this year to help students who are struggling in a particular subject.
The school has created a learning lab and hired three full time teachers to staff it.
Students who are having trouble are identified and then assigned to the lab to get some extra attention in math, science, English or reading.
Principal Joe Fantigrossi says without this lab, some students may be forgotten. “They tend to struggle throughout their high school careers and those struggles become more dominant as time goes on and the material becomes more challenging in their senior and junior years so with this lab, we can intervene quickly in a diagnostic sense and provide them the support they need to be successful in this building and onward."
This is one of several intervention initiatives at Fairport. Students will use the lab during school hours, typically during a study hall period.
