A mystery aroma that's being compared to maple syrup has been wafting over parts of New York City and New Jersey.
Fox New York said Wednesday that the odor was evident in Queens and from Manhattan's Upper East Side to the City Hall area.
In February 2009, investigators traced a syrupy smell to a New Jersey facility that processed fenugreek seeds. Fenugreek is a common ingredient in curry powders. The extract is also used in artificial vanilla, caramel, butterscotch and maple flavorings.
It was reported then that the sweet odor had drifted through parts of the city on at least nine separate occasions since 2005.
