High school students from 11 schools across the area have spent the past three weeks putting their engineering skills to the test and Saturday it was time to reveal their creations.

The goal was to create a human-powered design for a water pump that would be functional for a small child in a developing country.

Organizers also hoped to inspire the students to learn about the issues the world faces concerning water sustainability.

"We're really trying to get kids involved in science, technology and engineering to build the skills, particularly in the U.S. where we lack interest in science, engineering and technology that are going to be the future generation that will solve many of these problems,” said Ken Napolitano, Xylem Applied Water Systems President.

The 11 participating teams were competing for their share of $12,000 in prize money offered by Xylem and PTC.
