On this Veterans Day, News10NBC is remembering a man who headed a program just for veterans.

Edwin "Woody" Mench, a retired Air Force colonel and president of Honor Flight Rochester died Thursday. He was instrumental in starting the local chapter, getting free flights to take World War II veterans to see a memorial in their honor in Washington, D.C.

On Monday, News10NBC spoke with a member of the Honor Flight Program who remembered him best.

Bonnie Dean, Honor Flight Safety, said, "Woody was a very full of life, cheerful, whatever was needed he made sure it was needed. A lot of times the flights were all set, where are we going to make the money, get the money from because it's a volunteer and he always made sure that somehow or other we came up with the money and all the vets flew."

Calling hours for Mench just wrapped up at 7:00p.m. at the Keenan Funeral Home in Fairport. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Louis Church in Pittsford.
