Researchers: PTSD trauma can be triggered by TV

Created: 12/11/2013 1:13 AM WHEC.com

Watching traumatic events play out on live television may trigger post-traumatic stress disorder.

Researchers at the University of California Irvine surveyed more than 4,000 Americans in the weeks following the Boston Marathon bombings and found around 4% were experiencing symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Watching six or more hours a day of media coverage was the biggest predictor of a high stress reaction, surpassing those who were directly involved but watched less television.

People with mental health issues, or who had experienced other traumatic events like 9/11 or the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary, also had strong reactions to the bombings.
