Drinking diet soda may not help you lose weight.
Researchers from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health looked at dietary surveys filled out by thousands of adults between 1999 and 2010. They found overweight and obese adults who drank diet soda ate more calories than adults who drank regular soda and other sugary drinks. Experts say artificial sweeteners may disrupt appetite control, which control lead to an increase in food intake.
They emphasize that they are not discouraging the switch from regular to diet soda, but say these dieters should be extra aware of the snacks and food they are eating.
