A man who raped a 12-year-old girl when he was 19-years-old is now in charge of a local hotel. Steven Thompson is a Level 2, or medium risk, sex offender on the state registry.
A former employee of Thompson's is speaking out and says she feels his job in the hospitality business is inappropriate. News10NBC wanted to know if the owners knew about Thompson’s criminal past.
This came to I-Team 10’s attention from a former employee who was fired last week. She says she was never told her boss at the Super 8 was a sex offender. She told I-Team 10 that she doesn’t think it is right that a man convicted of rape should have access to hotel rooms where there might be children.
Steven Thompson, 32, of Bloomfield, is the general manager of the Super 8 on Empire Boulevard. In 2001, he was convicted of raping a 12-year-old girl and was sentenced to one and a half to four and a half years in prison. I-Team 10 tried to contact Thompson, but he did not return our calls.
Laurie Meskimen was hired by Thompson to work the front desk. She claims she got a bad vibe from him. She searched his name online and discovered his past. Meskimen says she had planned to tell the regional manager, but she was fired for missing a meeting last week. She says she did not contact I-Team 10 because she's disgruntled, but rather, because she has real concerns.
Laurie Meskimen said, "I just could not believe it, because, one, he's my boss. He's my general manager. He's in charge of all of us. And, two, I was just shocked that he was able to run a hotel. We're talking about 42 rooms full of beds.”
I-Team 10 also spoke with folks who feel people deserve second chances. News10NBC reached out to the corporate owner of Super 8, the Wyndham group, to find out if they were aware of Thompson’s status when he was hired and whether they feel it's appropriate for a former sex offender to be in charge of one of their hotels. Wyndham emailed me to say they are working on getting us that information.
