It's estimated that Foodlink will need 18-million pounds of food this year to meet the needs of the hungry in our 10-county area. That's up two-million pounds over last year.
Our cameras were at the warehouse on Mount Read Boulevard early Tuesday morning where the first round of St. John Fisher students was helping to sort a big donation that came from Wegmans.
This is the pharmacy school's "Day of Caring" which is part of National Volunteer Week. It's an important time of year for getting food out to pantries, because fewer food drives are held in the spring and donations really drop off in summer.
Foodlink Community Relations Manager Terra Keller said, “Generally we receive half of our donations in the months of November and January, meaning donated food through food drives, so it really drops off in the spring and summer months and it's still really important to think about the food bank because children are out of school and those children are usually receive free breakfast and lunch at school so the parents have to provide those extra meals.”
In 2013, Foodlink provided 13-million meals for about 200,000 people.
