Wayne County Sheriff wants his deputies to undergo new training to prevent deadly heroin overdoses.

Our news partners at the Messenger Post report the training will teach deputies how to recognize an overdose and how to administer Narcan. The drug can save lives when given during an overdose.

Sheriff Barry Virts applied for a grant to expand training and pay for Narcan kits.

This week, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a statewide initiative to fight heroin, which calls for all emergency responders to have access to Narcan.
