We’re just days away from the end of the legislative session, and one of the bills is still waiting to learn its fate.

The Compassion Care Act, if passed, would allow marijuana to be used to treat life-threatening illnesses. Some lawmakers are worried the drug will be misused, but it’s a bill that many people with serious medical issues are pushing for.

“There isn’t a place on my body that doesn’t hurt,” said Sue Kaszynski.

Lupus, Fibromyalgia and the list goes on and on. Sue Kaszynski has suffered from numerous medical problems for much of her life. One of her conditions causes the bones in her body to dislocate. Kaszynski says she has tried everything to lessen the pain. She says normal medications don’t work, but marijuana does. She says one time the pain was so bad that she decided to try it.

“I smoked a couple of bowls, and I was still dislocated. I did not get high. I did not get buzzed, but the pain was gone. All of my pain was gone,” Kaszynski said.

Kaszynski is sharing her story to help convince state lawmakers to legalize medical marijuana. The legislature is only in session for another week, but Assemblyman Bill Nojay says an agreement could be reached. He says he’s not opposed to legalization, but there are concerns.

“The biggest concern is that we’re creating another legal class of drug which can be addictive, which can cause road casualties, highway casualties and can cause other problems within an individual’s life or within the family,” said Nojay.

As a marine, Sue Kaszynski says she always tries to obey the law. She says that’s why legalizing medical marijuana is so important.

“It bothers me that I’m doing something illegal. It really does,” says Kaszynski.

If the Compassionate Care Act does pass, New York would become the 23rd state to legalize medical marijuana.
