Some students at one local school received a parting gift as the school year comes to an end.

Each child at School No. 34 received a tote bag with four books inside. The students will receive another set of books throughout the summer.

The school's principal says it's all to promote summer reading and he says it's something that the entire family can get involved in. Principal Carmine Peluso said, “I think kids just need to have books in hand. I think they need to hear that their parents can sit and read with them or read to them so that it becomes a family activity.”

School leaders say studies show more than 70-percent of students who take part in summer reading maintain or increase their reading scores.
