Will there be a Seneca-owned casino in Monroe County? News10NBC has learned County Executive Maggie Brooks has sent Governor Cuomo a letter stating that a casino owned and operated by the Seneca Nation is not in the best interest of Monroe County.

In the letter, Brooks says she has spoken with residents as well as business, faith and governmental leaders who are both in support of and against a casino in Monroe County.

Not all republican leaders in Monroe County share Brooks’s opinion. Gates Town Supervisor Mark Assini says that he still wants to bring a casino to Gates. He says the people he serves support a casino in their community.

Mark Assini, Gates Town Supervisor, said, “In the town of Gates, residents support this overwhelmingly. They support a casino in the town of Gates and as long as my residents continue to support a casino in Gates and all the benefits that would come with it, I'm going to fight for them.”

The Seneca Nation said in a statement Friday that it has no new plans to pursue a casino in Henrietta or anywhere else in Monroe County. The statement said, " The Seneca Nation clearly outlined our position on potential casino expansion in a May 8 letter to Legislator Wilcox. Nothing has changed. While the timing of the County Executive's statement is curious, our position remains as it was two months ago."
