A 48-year-old lieutenant with the Brockport Fire Department is facing charges of stealing public money, stealing mail and fraud.

According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Craig R. Gestring, in February 2013, a postal carrier was robbed at gunpoint while delivering mail to an apartment building in Brooklyn, N.Y. We’re told a resident of that building was expecting two checks from the Social Security Administration. Days later, we’re told the same two checks were deposited into an account owned by Steven Ray of Brockport. Investigators say other checks deposited into Ray’s account during this time included checks issued to other residents of the same Brooklyn apartment building.

Gestring says between January and August 2013, additional checks issued to individuals in Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and Florida were also deposited into Ray’s accounts.

We’re told a total of 128 checks worth nearly $400,000 were deposited into Ray’s accounts.

Officials with the Brockport Fire Department tell us they are conducting their own investigation. If convicted, the charges carry a penalty of 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine or both.
