Disappointing news Thursday for family and friends of a missing Gates-Chili High School student. Brittanee Drexel disappeared in Myrtle Beach last weekend.
Reports out of that area earlier this week said the teen had been spotted on a transit bus, but police say they tracked down the young lady and it turns out it was someone else.
This is a disappointing set back for Brittanee’s friends and family members. Brittanee’s mother said it would be another day of passing out flyers and searching by foot.
Dawn Drexel said the group would focus the search around the night clubs and areas where Brittanee was partying. We've also learned police have surveillance photos of Brittanee as she was leaving the hotel where she stayed.
Brittanee was in Myrtle Beach for spring break without her parents’ permission. She hasn't been seen since last weekend.
Technology is playing a key role in the search for the 17-year-old Gates-Chili junior. A website has been established by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children so people can log on and view Brittanee's photo. A text message was also sent out with Brittanee's picture and a contact number.
Her mother says she's not surprised the sighting of her daughter turned out to be false and she fears the worst.
Dawn Drexel said, “I think something happened to her. She may not be in the area. I don't know if she's hiding. I just feel that with everything that has happened, with her leaving her clothes, her staying in the same clothes for five days, her cell phone - not calling anybody. It's something that Brittanee just wouldn't do.”
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has sent two retired FBI agents to work with local law enforcement in the search for Brittanee.
