WASHINGTON - An Ontario-based company that makes Hydroxycut dietary supplements says it has agreed to recall 14 products in the U.S. out of "an abundance of caution."
The recall comes after U.S. government health officials warned dieters and body builders to immediately stop using Hydroxycut. The Food and Drug Administration says it has received 23 reports of liver problems, including the death of a 19-year-old boy in 2007. The death was reported to the F.D.A. this March.
Available in grocery stores and pharmacies, Hydroxycut is advertised as made from natural ingredients. The F.D.A. says at least nine million packages were sold last year. Other patients experienced symptoms ranging from jaundice, or yellowing of the skin, to liver failure.
In a statement posted on its website, drug maker Iovate Health Sciences of Oakville, Ontario says the number of reported problems is small relative to the many millions of people who have used Hydroxycut products.
But it says it's issued a voluntary recall because consumer safety is its top priority. Health Canada could not immediately provide information about Hydroxycut products in this country.
