URMC to participate in landmark study

WHEC-TVIf you're thinking about expanding your family, you might be able to take part in the nation's largest and most comprehensive study on children's health.

Research doctors at the U of R Medical Center are in the planning stages right now for their part in the study, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. One thousand local children will be selected starting in 2012.

Children will be followed from birth to age 21 to examine how genes and environmental factors can influence conditions like autism, diabetes and learning disabilities.

Dr. Shanna Swan said, “There are a lot of exposures out there that we can be concerned about and a lot of fear about  different exposures and some of that will be justified and some of it won't. We need help sorting that out - which things are really risky to children.”

The U of R Medical Center has received a multi-million dollar grant for the study.

Monroe County is the only upstate area being included in this study.
