A $10 million gift from local hotel owner Ernest Del Monte will help make the University of Rochester's neuromedicine program one of the best in the nation, and the world. Del Monte also plans to give an additional $10 million sometime in the future, which will make his overall gift the largest in the history of the University of Rochester Medical Center.
URMC unveiled plans Wednesday for the creation of the Ernest J. Del Monte Neuromedicine Institute. It will be a comprehensive center, housed in the current medical research annex building. The institute will include 200,000 square feet of research and treatment space, coordinating doctors and scientists together to fight neurological diseases.
"There's no doubt in my mind that this will be an extremely, extremely successful institute for the city, for the country, and for the world," said Del Monte.
Dr. Webster Pilcher, Chairman of Neurosurgery at URMC, said, "We have an extraordinary neuroscience community here in Rochester, and this gift will bring together research and clinical treatments for the first time and allow for great things to happen." Pilcher said that the U of R is already on the cusp of some great discoveries in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and strokes.
The Del Monte Institute will position URMC for more federal research funding and expanded clinical trials in the coming years.
